Internet buzz meister (and Motherboard subject) Jonah Peretti knows a thing or three about how to go viral, and not with diseases.

…His point is that it is not just the quality of an idea that counts, it is how much effort you put into spreading it.

As we learned at ROFLCon, internet memes don’t just happen. They are the result of inspiration or accident (and in some cases, unfortunately, unwanted publicity), but also of marketing, via social media or good ol’ fashioned friend networks. If a cat plays the piano or a dude makes a funny rant and no one’s there to roll on the floor and laugh about it and, eventually, make other memes based on it did it really exist?
And there may be no better model for spreading an idea a meme than religion. Christianity is, after all, the original viral meme. Of course, while it’s buzz-worthiness has since been replaced by other memes, including “another kind of Christianity (see below), it’s still going strong. And it’s inspired successful spin-offs, like the internationally-enthusiastic Church of Latter Day Saints.
